Clinical and Bacteriological Studies of Shigellosis

Abstract
In order to determine the causative strain and susceptibility to antibiotics of infantile and childhood shigellosis, clinical and bacteriological studies were carried out. Total 99 cases of infants and children who were treated at pediatric department of Korea University Hospital from January, 1973 to December, 1981 were studied and the result obtained were as follows.
1. The sex ratio showed 55 of male and 44 of female, 1.25: 1.
2. The infants of 1 to 2 years of age to be most frequently affected (58.6%).
3. The peak seasonal incidence was noted from August to September, although there was occurence throughout the year.
4. On bacteriological study, most of the strain was Shigella flexneri (87.9%) and remainder was Shigella sonnei (12. 1%).
5. The result of sensitivity test for antibiotics revealed that resistance to ampicillin was increased abruptly from 1978. Colistin, cephalosporin, tobramycin, amikacin, gentamicin, kanamycin were highly sensitive throughout the study and chloramphenicol and tetracycline were not effective.
6. There were 3 deaths and they all showed high fever with convulsion and leukocytosis. The case fatality rate was 3%.
